Custom LASIK & WaveFront

July 1st 2007

Custom LASIK & WaveFront
Custom LASIK represents the very latest in LASIK technology and a growing number of doctors throughout the country are now offering this option to patients. Custom LASIK is based upon the very unique visual characteristics of your eye. Up until now, with glasses, contacts and conventional corrections were quite similar for each type of prescription.

During Custom LASIK, Wavefront LASIK technology measures the eye from front to back to create a three-dimensional corneal map. The Wavefront LASIK device collects information by using light reflected off the retina and through the pupil, and into the device, creating your unique map reflecting your lower or higher order aberrations. A patient’s unique visual irregularities are contained in this map, which is then sent to the laser via computer. The Wavefront map effectively guides the laser in customizing the treatment to your individual visual irregularities, producing a truly personalized LASIK treatment.

Custom LASIK offers the following advantages:

  • Greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision
  • Greater chance of achieving better than 20/20 vision
  • Reduced chance of losing best corrected vision
  • Reduced chance of losing visual quality or contrast sensitivity
  • Reduced chance of night-vision disturbances and glare
  • Potential also exists for custom LASIK to treat those people who have lost best-corrected vision from any refractive surgery

The following FDA-approved systems to perform custom LASIK:

  • The LADARVision System is made up of the LADARVision 4000 excimer laser and the LADARWave diagnostic Wavefront device. Alcon calls its custom LASIK procedure “LADARVision CustomCornea.” The system is FDA-approved for treatment of up to -7.00 D of nearsightedness with less than -0.50 D of astigmatism.
  • VISX Star 4 system is made up of the Star S4 laser and the WaveScan Wavefront device. The company calls its custom LASIK procedure “CustomVue.” It is FDA-approved for treatment of myopic astigmatism up to -6.00 D, with cylinder up to -3.00 D in patients 21 or older. With the new WaveScan, higher order aberrations are identified. These higher order aberrations are different than sphere and cylinder, but have a noticeable impact on vision. The WaveScan produces test results called a “Waveprint” which provides surgeons with all of the aforementioned data, which in turn are programmed into a custom treatment plan utilizing the VISX Star S4 laser.
  • Bausch & Lomb’s Zyoptix system combines its Technolas 217 excimer laser with the Zyoptix Diagnostic Workstation. The system is called the Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217z Zyoptix System for Personalized Vision Correction. Zyoptix LASIK surgery can correct up to -7.00 D of nearsightedness with up to -3.00 D of astigmatism and “manifest refraction spherical equivalent” equal to or less than -7.50 D. (MRSE is a measurement that describes the total refractive error of the eye.) The company says Zyoptix corrects higher-order aberrations, with more than 40% of respondents in the U.S. clinical study reporting better night vision driving.
